Technical VP - AI Data Platform

About the role

The Emerging Storage Lab at Huawei Canada is seeking a Technical Vice President to lead the AI Data Platform initiative. This senior position will define the roadmap for next‑generation data storage and AI retrieval systems, aligning research with global R&D and business goals.

Key responsibilities

• Define and drive the technology roadmap for AI‑native data lakes, intelligent caching, and high‑performance retrieval infrastructures supporting Large Language Models and Retrieval‑Augmented Generation.
• Lead the transition to Data‑Centric AI, pioneering research on agent memory, knowledge bases, and RAG‑optimized data intelligence.
• Architect and evangelize end‑to‑end AI Data Platform solutions, overseeing architecture reviews, performance optimisation, and prototype development that unifies file storage, data lakes, and vector indexes.
• Mentor and manage a world‑class research team, fostering innovation in information retrieval, AI models, and scalable storage systems.
• Shape industry standards by publishing research, filing patents, and representing Huawei at top conferences such as VLDB, SIGIR, and NeurIPS.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in data systems research or engineering, with at least 2 years in a technical leadership role.
• Proven record of delivering industry‑leading research in data management, unstructured data processing, or AI/ML scalability.
• Strong communication skills to convey complex data lifecycle concepts to executives and engineers.
• Passion for mentoring leaders and driving innovation at the intersection of database systems and generative AI.

Required skills

• Experience with Data Lake platforms such as Databricks or Snowflake.
• Knowledge of information‑retrieval systems like Milvus, Pinecone, or Cohere.
• Deep expertise in object stores, distributed file systems, and vector database technologies.
• Hands‑on experience with AI/ML infrastructure, hybrid search tuning, index freshness, and multi‑tenancy in vector spaces.
