Surety Underwriting Specialist

About the role

Zurich Canada is seeking a Surety Underwriting Specialist to join its Contract Surety team in Toronto. Reporting to the National Director, Core Contract Surety, you will underwrite new and existing surety business, manage a portfolio of accounts, and actively promote the Zurich brand in the marketplace.

Key responsibilities

• Produce and underwrite new and existing contract surety business with moderate to high technical complexity.
• Assess customers’ financial, technical and organizational capacity and provide bond recommendations.
• Develop and maintain relationships with key brokers, seeking new account opportunities.
• Negotiate bond terms, participate in team meetings, and contribute to underwriting manuals and guidelines.
• Attend industry events, support cross‑sell initiatives, and provide guidance to team members.

Required profile

• University degree or post‑secondary education in finance, accounting, banking or related field.
• Minimum five years of relevant surety underwriting experience.
• Strong broker network and understanding of broker relationship models.
• Effective risk assessment, negotiation and decision‑making abilities.
• Excellent communication and customer‑service skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Financial and credit analysis capabilities.
