Stationary Engineer (4th Class) – Mechanical Systems

About the role

The Stationary Engineer (4th Class) will join Black & McDonald’s Ottawa facilities team, reporting to the Contract Manager. This union‑represented, full‑time role is responsible for operating and maintaining the mechanical plant equipment that supports the building’s heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.

Key responsibilities

• Start‑up, operate, and shut down building equipment, including pumps, air handling units (AHUs), fans, unit heaters, chillers and heat pumps.
• Maintain and update operating logs and computerized Building Automation System (BAS) records.
• Perform routine mechanical maintenance tasks on a daily, monthly, quarterly and annual basis as defined by preventive‑maintenance work orders.
• Service and troubleshoot minor chiller, heat pump, and compressor issues; replace filters, belts and other wear items.
• Respond to service calls, including emergency repairs, and coordinate subcontractor support when required.
• Inspect idle equipment, conduct cleaning, lubrication, and adjustments in accordance with equipment ratings.
• Prepare and close work orders with accurate notes, time, and parts usage.
• Report daily operations, non‑compliance concerns and recommendations to the Contract Manager.
• Assist with commissioning of new or upgraded equipment and ensure proper personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.

Required profile

• Committed, collaborative professional with a strong safety focus.
• Ability to work independently on shift, including after‑hours service calls.
• Willingness to cross‑train in other facility areas and support team objectives.

Required skills

• Experience with computerized Building Automation Systems.
• Knowledge of pump, fan, AHU, unit heater, chiller and heat pump operation.
• Competence in compressor maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Ability to perform filter changes, belt replacements and general mechanical repairs.
• Understanding of PPE requirements and safety standards for mechanical rooms.
