Software Engineer Intern

About the role

This hybrid/on‑site internship is with nexthopai, an AI infrastructure startup developing systems for large‑scale AI deployments. You will work in Burnaby’s Lower Mainland, supporting customers and contributing to core system development.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in all parts of software engineering, from design and implementation to testing and peer review.
• Collaborate with engineers to build and optimise our core systems.
• Support customers throughout project scoping, proof of concept, early trials, and production/escalation phases.
• Help shape the startup by defining culture, challenging processes, and influencing the company’s future direction.

Required profile

• Strong problem‑solving skills, quick learning ability and enthusiasm for a collaborative startup environment.
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field, with internship experience.
• Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team.
• Confidence to ask questions and take ownership of projects.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python, C, or C++.
• Solid understanding of systems software, including embedded and distributed systems.
• Familiarity with container technologies such as Docker and databases like SQL or NoSQL (a plus).
