Shift Sub-Head – Operations Engineer

About the role

The Shift Sub-Head – Operations Engineer leads the day‑to‑day operation of mechanical and building systems across the UBC campus. Reporting to the Operations Head and Sub‑Heads, this role ensures safe, efficient, and reliable performance of heating, cooling, ventilation and related equipment while delivering excellent customer service.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and control campus facilities using Siemens, Delta and Johnson Controls building management systems (BMS).
• Supervise shift and relief Operating Engineers, assigning tasks and ensuring compliance with work orders, TSBC, BC Building Code and WorkSafeBC.
• Respond to alarms and incidents, directing remedial actions or recommending solutions to senior leadership.
• Conduct inspections of ventilation, heating and cooling systems to verify safe and efficient operation.
• Review daily operational reminders and toolbox meeting items to plan work scope.
• Provide on‑the‑job training and promote a safe work environment for all crew members.

Required profile

• Proven experience in operating and maintaining mechanical, heating/cooling and ventilation systems on a large campus or industrial site.
• Ability to lead shift teams, delegate duties and ensure adherence to safety regulations.
• Strong customer‑service orientation with a focus on campus safety.
• Knowledge of Power Engineer, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Safety Regulations.
