About the role

The Department of Wood Science at the University of British Columbia is seeking a part‑time sessional lecturer to teach BEST V 400: Biomimicry and Biocomposites during the 2026 Winter Session (Term 1, September–December). The course introduces students to bio‑inspired material design, natural structural systems, and biocomposites.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver core lectures and coordinate guest speakers for a 3‑credit course.
  • Lead class discussions, supervise teaching assistants, and hold weekly office hours.
  • Assess quizzes, reports, presentations, and final project papers.
  • Guide student projects focused on developing biomimetic designs for practical applications.

Required profile

  • Completed PhD (or current PhD candidate) in Forestry, Materials Science, Chemical/Biological Engineering, Polymer Science, Wood Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong background in biomaterials, bio‑based composites, biomimicry, polysaccharides, bio‑fabrication, and rheology.
  • Prior teaching or teaching‑assistant experience in biomimicry, biocomposites, or closely related subjects.
  • Demonstrated research experience in biomimicry systems and interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Compensation of $4,000 per credit (approximately $12,000 for the 3‑credit course).
