Senior Staff Backend Engineer – Data & Storage Services

About the role

Affirm is seeking a Senior Staff Backend Engineer to lead the Data and Storage Services organization. You will shape the lakehouse analytics platform, ensuring secure, high‑performance data infrastructure that powers multiple financial products.

Key responsibilities

• Architect and evolve the lakehouse analytics platform, driving strategy around Snowflake, Apache Iceberg, and Spark.
• Design and implement robust Role‑Based Access Control and dynamic data masking policies in Snowflake.
• Lead analytics engineering practices, including data modeling, dbt transformation pipelines, and data quality frameworks.
• Drive data governance and privacy initiatives using Atlan for cataloging, lineage, and policy enforcement.
• Identify and execute cost‑optimization strategies across compute and storage, including Snowflake warehouse tuning and query optimization.
• Collaborate with product, data science, and business intelligence teams to understand data needs and provide architectural guidance.

Required profile

• Senior‑level professional with extensive experience in large‑scale data platforms.
• Proven ability to lead technical direction and influence cross‑functional teams.
• Strong understanding of data security, compliance, and auditability requirements.
• Experience driving cost‑efficiency and performance improvements in cloud data environments.
