Senior Researcher - AI Powered Big Data Platform

About the role

Huawei Canada is seeking a Senior Researcher to lead the development of an AI‑powered big data platform within its Computing Data Application Acceleration Lab. The role focuses on full‑stack innovations, software‑hardware co‑design, and next‑generation GPU architectures for diverse applications.

Key responsibilities

• Track emerging technical trends and developments for big data and AI systems in industry and academia, conduct insight and survey analysis, and identify direction of cutting‑edge technologies.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into innovative technology solutions aligned with organizational objectives.
• Analyze and define software requirements and features, develop proof‑of‑concept AI‑powered big data system infrastructure, and optimize performance and cost.
• Integrate the PoC system into existing products and deliver it to the production team.
• Generate intellectual property such as patents or trade‑secrets and publish research findings in peer‑reviewed journals or conferences.
• Present research at conferences and engage in collaborations with external research institutes and universities.

Required profile

• Holds an MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum 5 + years of professional software development experience with C++/Java, including object‑oriented design.
• At least 2 years of platform/system‑level development experience with performance profiling, tuning, and optimization for big data, database, or AI system infrastructures.
• Demonstrated proficiency in at least one core big data system (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Flink, Ray, Hive, HBase, MongoDB).
• Familiarity with recent machine learning, large language models, and generative AI models.
• Knowledge of system/processor performance, CPU/GPU/NPU architectures, and compilers is an asset.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as Git and Maven is an asset.
• Ability to work effectively both individually and within a multi‑zone, multi‑site team.
• Strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills.
