Senior Principal Researcher – AI Agent & Multimodal Interaction System

About the role

Huawei Canada’s Human‑Machine Interaction Lab is seeking a Senior Principal Researcher to lead the vision and development of next‑generation AI‑agent‑native multimodal interaction systems across devices such as smartphones, wearables, automotive and smart environments.

Key responsibilities

• Define and drive the end‑to‑end vision for AI‑agent‑native multimodal interaction systems.
• Design interaction models that center on agent autonomy, intent‑driven experiences and context awareness.
• Lead the creation of seamless multimodal experiences across mobile, automotive, AI glasses, wearables and smart environments.
• Integrate multimodal foundation models (VLMs, multimodal LLMs) into real‑world interaction pipelines.
• Iterate quickly from concept to production‑ready solutions, evaluating usability, latency and feedback loops.
• Identify opportunities to unify interaction frameworks across voice, visual and physical interfaces.

Required profile

• PhD or Master degree in Computer Science (HCI, AI), Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• Strong understanding of multimodal AI systems and how perception, language models and reasoning interact in real‑world applications.
• Proven experience designing or shipping AI‑driven user experiences (voice assistants, copilots, agents) at scale.
• Hands‑on experience with Multimodal LLMs or Vision‑Language Models and their deployment in interaction systems.
• Track record of delivering innovative interaction experiences to large‑scale consumer products or influential research publications.
