Second Mate – Home Trade

About the role

The Second Mate will join our home‑trade fleet to command and operate vessels that transport passengers and cargo along Canadian waters. This position offers staff accommodation and a remote work environment on board.

Key responsibilities

• Command and operate the vessel, ensuring safe navigation and compliance with Canadian regulations.
• Supervise and coordinate a deck crew of 5‑10 members.
• Determine the vessel’s position using navigational instruments, maps and charts.
• Oversee loading and unloading of cargo, maintaining proper stowage.
• Maintain and calibrate navigational equipment.
• Record progress, weather, and sea conditions in the ship’s log.

Required profile

• 3 to less than 5 years of sea‑going experience on factory freezers, trawlers, or offshore rigs.
• Transport Canada Certificate of Competency.
• Marine Emergency Duty (MED) Training certification.
• Medical exam clearance.
• Dependable, organized, and a strong team player with excellent communication skills.
