Scientific Engineer – Seismic Structural Research

About the role

The University of British Columbia seeks a Scientific Engineer to lead advanced research on reinforced and precast concrete buildings under seismic loading. You will design archetype high‑rise structures for Canada and the United States, develop sophisticated numerical models, and disseminate findings through technical reports and peer‑reviewed papers.

Key responsibilities

• Develop conceptual and detailed designs of archetype reinforced‑concrete and precast‑concrete high‑rise buildings.
• Create advanced nonlinear models using Python and OpenSeesPy to simulate seismic response.
• Interpret analysis results and produce technical documentation, research reports, and journal manuscripts.
• Provide technical oversight and mentorship to graduate, co‑op, and research staff.
• Collaborate with external research partners and ensure compliance with Canadian and U.S. seismic design codes.

Required profile

• Industry experience in structural engineering and seismic design.
• Ability to work independently while reporting to faculty leadership.
• Strong knowledge of seismic design provisions in Canadian and U.S. building codes.
• Experience mentoring students and junior researchers.
