Researcher - Real-Time Embedded OS

About the role

Huawei Canada has an immediate permanent opening for a Researcher. The Intelligent Real-Time Operating System Lab focuses on OS architecture, concurrency challenges, and optimal resource management for diverse use cases such as AI/ML compute.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, analyze, and distill the latest research on OS concepts such as scheduling, synchronization, distributed service/state management, IPC, and isolation techniques.
• Lead and collaborate on research and implementation of advanced OS technologies, including IPC/communication optimization, QoS control, partitioning/isolation, resource allocation, and distributed error recovery/failover.
• Explore optimization opportunities for communication, boot, and recovery execution speed based on recent research progress.

Required profile

• PhD degree in Computer Science, Operating Systems, Applied Mathematics, or related technical fields.
• Knowledge of operating system architecture, CPU architecture, and computer systems theory.
• Experience in theoretical and empirical OS research.
• Proficiency in system‑level programming languages such as C/C++, Assembly, and Rust.
• Ability to apply, evaluate, and modify subsystems of existing operating systems (e.g., Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, FreeRTOS).
• Strong interpersonal skills for cross‑group and cross‑culture collaboration.
• At least 2 years of work or internship experience in a university, industry, or government lab with a primary focus on OS research (preferred).
• Publications at top OS conferences (e.g., SOSP, SIGOPS, IEEE) or Linux Kernel summits are a plus.

What we offer

• Annual total target compensation ranging from $106,000 to $156,000 (based on 2,080 hours per year).
