Researcher - Power System and Grid Interconnection

About the role

Huawei Canada is seeking a researcher for a 12‑month contract to work on power system and grid interconnection technologies. The position is based in Montreal within the Smart Grid Technology Lab, focusing on real‑time simulation, microgrid management and advanced inverter control.

Key responsibilities

• Develop grid‑forming and grid‑following inverter and converter integration technologies.
• Create power system and control component models for EMT simulation.
• Implement and improve grid‑forming control strategies (e.g., droop, VSG) and protection strategies for IBRs.
• Write protection and control algorithms in C/C++ and Python, and package them as DLL or EXE files.
• Simulate microgrids using EMTP, PLECS and/or Simulink, generate optimized C/C++ code for real‑time execution.
• Deploy communication protocols such as SV, GOOSE, MODBUS and IoT protocols, and integrate with PLC controllers.

Required profile

• Ph.D. or Ph.D. student in Electrical Engineering or a related field with a strong publication record.
• Proficiency in circuit design and simulation tools (e.g., EMTP, PSCAD).
• Deep knowledge of microgrids, IBRs, related standards and protection dynamics.
• Fluent in C/C++ and Python; experience with FPGA or PLC programming is a plus.
