Researcher – AI/ML Real-Time Embedded OS

About the role

Huawei Canada’s Intelligent Real‑Time Operating System Lab is seeking a researcher to advance AI/ML‑enabled real‑time embedded operating systems. The role focuses on exploring scheduling, resource management, and performance optimisation for mixed‑criticality edge devices.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, analyse and distil the latest research on AI/ML concepts relevant to operating systems, including scheduling, resource management, performance, sparsity and isolation techniques.
• Lead and collaborate on research and implementation of advanced ML/AI technologies such as kernel configuration optimisation, QoS control, partitioning/isolation, resource allocation and power management.
• Explore and showcase novel optimisation opportunities to meet customer expectations for performance and new‑feature usability, turning research into practical OS enhancements.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science, AI/ML, Operating Systems, Applied Mathematics or a related technical field.
• 2+ years of experience in university, industry or government labs with a primary focus on operating‑system research.
• Strong knowledge of AI/ML design, training, inference and tooling applied to OS architecture.
• Experience conducting theoretical and empirical research on operating systems.
• Ability to evaluate, modify and integrate subsystems of existing operating systems such as Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD or FreeRTOS.
• Excellent interpersonal skills for cross‑group and cross‑culture collaboration.

Required skills

• Proficiency in C, C++, Assembly and Rust for system‑level programming.
• Hands‑on experience with operating systems like Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and FreeRTOS.
