Research Engineer - Instrumentation

About the role

The Research Engineer – Instrumentation will design, fabricate, and implement tools, protocols, and analytical methods for measuring combustion and emissions of alternative fuels. The role involves collaboration with UBC team members and industrial partners, data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Design and create unique prototype equipment for novel engineering applications, including full‑cycle design, analysis, testing, and documentation.
• Design, fabricate, implement, and maintain instrumentation and protocols for measuring combustion and emissions of alternative fuels.
• Develop and implement measurement techniques for lab‑ or field‑based data collection.
• Develop, implement, and maintain software for instrument control and data analysis using LabVIEW, MATLAB, and Python/NumPy.
• Oversee laboratory operations, ensuring safety, equipment commissioning, purchasing, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Support measurement campaigns, including design, operation of research engine facilities, data analysis, and preparation of reports.
• Prepare archival research documentation such as journal articles, conference papers, and presentations.
• Provide guidance to graduate research students on equipment development and maintenance.

Required profile

• Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science (BASc or MASc preferred).
• Minimum one year of related experience or equivalent education/experience.
