About the role
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of British Columbia is seeking a full‑time Research Associate II to join the interdisciplinary Hallam Lab. The role supports cutting‑edge projects at the interface of microbial ecology, biological engineering, bioinformatics and sustainability.
Key responsibilities
- Design and conduct independent research, contribute to publications and grant‑funded activities.
- Support projects involving large sample collections, environmental genomic library screening and engineered living materials.
- Coordinate sample submission, biobanking, data access and transfer with trainees and external service providers.
- Maintain biological resource collections in collaboration with the UBC Biobank.
- Collaborate with external partners, core facilities and service providers.
- Mentor and lead students, post‑docs and staff in modern laboratory practices.
- Organise and host weekly lab meetings.
- Oversee day‑to‑day laboratory operations, identify gaps and implement improvements.
Required profile
- Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics or related field.
- Experience with large‑scale sample handling, biobanking and genomic library screening.
- Proven ability to work independently and lead laboratory teams.
- Strong communication and mentorship skills.
- Commitment to safety, compliance and institutional regulations.
