Research Associate – High-Resolution Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy

About the role

The Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute at UBC seeks a Research Associate to lead and operate its high‑resolution electron microscopy and spectroscopy facilities. The role supports interdisciplinary projects that investigate emergent quantum phenomena in advanced materials.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee management and daily operation of the aberration‑corrected Nion HERMES 200 scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM).
• Plan instrument bookings, coordinate experiments, and liaise with vendors for service and repairs.
• Mentor graduate students and post‑doctoral researchers in microscopy techniques.
• Support multiple research groups by providing expert guidance on electron imaging and spectroscopy.
• Maintain documentation, safety protocols, and data management for the facility.

Required profile

• PhD in a field related to quantum materials, condensed matter physics, materials science, or a closely aligned discipline.
• Extensive experience with high‑resolution electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary research environments.
