About the role

This part‑time position supports a collaborative research program in the Aviles and Jankowski labs at UBC's Department of Zoology. The technician will work on specimen processing, data management, and laboratory infrastructure while mentoring undergraduate assistants.

Key responsibilities

  • Specimen processing and curation of arthropod samples, including sorting, photographing, measuring and maintaining digital databases.
  • Coordinate and mentor undergraduate assistants, providing guidance on lab projects and ensuring task alignment with principal investigators.
  • Manage ecological datasets: data entry, cleaning, visualization, statistical analysis and development of analytical workflows using R.
  • Support laboratory infrastructure, including microscopy, imaging systems and eco‑acoustic monitoring equipment, and maintain lab organization and supplies.

Required profile

  • Enrolled or recent graduate in biology, ecology, zoology or a related field.
  • Experience with specimen handling and digital documentation.
  • Ability to supervise and train undergraduate students.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Required skills

  • Excel for data entry and manipulation.
  • R for data cleaning, visualization and statistical analysis.
  • Microscopy and imaging equipment operation.

What we offer

  • Hourly wage $29.27‑$31.92 CAD.
  • Part‑time, fixed‑term appointment until May 2027.
  • Opportunity to work in a collaborative research environment within the Aviles and Jankowski labs.
