Remote Backend Engineer – AI Coding Agents – $85/hr

About the role

Mercor is seeking a remote Backend Engineer to work with cutting‑edge AI coding agents on complex engineering tasks. You will evaluate model‑generated code, ensure its quality, and help improve AI performance while delivering production‑ready backend solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Use frontier AI coding agents (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Windsurf, Gemini CLI) to complete and evaluate engineering tasks.
• Review model‑generated code for correctness, maintainability, performance, and security.
• Identify bugs, edge cases, and failure modes in AI outputs.
• Compare results from multiple AI models and assess strengths and weaknesses.
• Apply professional engineering judgment to realistic backend scenarios.
• Work independently and asynchronously to meet deadlines while contributing to AI model improvements.

Required profile

• 2+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
• Experience building APIs, distributed systems, microservices, backend platforms, or databases.
• Regular use of AI coding agents for development tasks.
• Ability to evaluate model‑generated code and spot architectural trade‑offs.
• Preferred: experience with large‑scale production systems.

What we offer

• Compensation up to $85 per hour.
• $400 per accepted task (tasks typically 1–3 hours after ramp‑up).
• No fixed task limits – work as much as you want.
• Fully remote contract position.
