Power System Engineering Technologist (P.L. Eng.)

About the role

AltaLink, which delivers electricity to millions of Albertans through its transmission lines, is hiring a Power System Engineering Technologist (P.L. Eng.) for its Project Engineering team in Calgary. The role focuses on developing, validating and managing transmission-system and electrical-equipment models, preparing transmission modelling data packages (PDUPs), line-impedance calculations and facility-rating reports, supporting small interconnection studies, and helping improve modelling processes. It is open to APEGA Professional Licensees (P.L. Eng.) or those eligible to obtain that designation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, authenticate and submit complete transmission modelling data packages to the AESO for existing facilities and planned additions, modifications and re-ratings.
• Validate and maintain transmission-system and electrical-equipment models so they reflect current configurations, equipment characteristics and approved changes.
• Develop and maintain line-impedance calculations and reports, and facility-rating reports.
• Ensure modelling data, models, documentation and submissions comply with AESO ISO Rules, Alberta Reliability Standards and AltaLink standards.
• Support facility studies by providing system capacity assessments, power flow analysis and short-circuit information to internal teams and external customers.
• Work with AESO teams to improve modelling processes and procedures.

Required profile

• Electrical Engineering Technology diploma; a focus on power systems is an asset.
• P.L. Eng. designation with APEGA or eligibility to obtain it, with a defined scope of practice covering the duties.
• Minimum of six years of relevant experience in engineering or modelling of high-voltage transmission or distribution systems; preference for two or more years of specific transmission/distribution modelling experience and familiarity with AESO rules.
• Proven ability to carry out the listed responsibilities.

Required skills

• Knowledge of transmission system modelling operation and planning.
• Experience with PTI's PSSE and tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC is an asset.
• Familiarity with AESO modelling data requirements and rules.
• Strong written and verbal communication, teamwork and organizational skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
