Power Communication Protocol Developer

About the role

Huawei Canada's Smart Grid Technology Lab is seeking a Power Communication Protocol Developer to design, implement, and maintain industrial communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, and Modbus. The role involves integrating these protocols into gateways, EMS, SCADA, and other energy devices while supporting system testing and documentation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and integrate power communication protocols (IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 104).
• Design communication modules, data models, and protocol interaction logic.
• Collaborate with internal teams to embed protocols into company platforms (gateways, EMS, SCADA).
• Troubleshoot communication issues and support system‑level testing and validation.
• Prepare technical documentation and work with cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑quality solutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
• Experience with at least one power/industrial communication protocol (IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 104).
• Proficiency in C/C++ or system‑level languages such as Go, Rust, or Python.
• Understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/UDP, sockets).
• Strong problem‑solving ability and capacity to work independently or in a team.
