Postdoctoral Fellow – Innovative Mass Spectrometry (CRC‑MC‑ICP‑MS/MS)

About the role

The University of British Columbia’s Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a three‑year, full‑time postdoctoral fellowship starting January 2027. The fellow will operate, maintain, and advance metal isotope measurement techniques using the new Sapphire XD CRC‑MC‑ICP‑MS/MS instrument.

Key responsibilities

• Perform day‑to‑day operation and routine maintenance of the CRC‑MC‑ICP‑MS/MS (≈60% of effort).
• Develop and optimise stable metal isotope methods (Fe, V, Zn) exploiting reduced sample mass requirements (≈40% of effort).
• Collaborate with Nu Instruments for instrument support and method development.
• Mentor graduate students and train other users on the platform.
• Prepare and submit technical and scientific manuscripts; present findings at conferences.

Required profile

• Post‑doctoral level researcher with a strong interest in isotope geochemistry and mass spectrometry.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.

Required skills

• Experience with ICP‑MS or related mass‑spectrometry instrumentation.
• Knowledge of metal isotope measurement techniques (e.g., Fe, V, Zn).
• Proficiency in operating and maintaining high‑precision analytical equipment.
• Familiarity with the Sapphire XD CRC‑MC‑ICP‑MS/MS platform is a plus.
