Media Relations Strategist

About the role

The Media Relations Strategist supports UBC Okanagan’s Public Affairs unit by shaping and sharing the university’s story across local, regional, national and international audiences. Working closely with faculty, staff, students and media partners, the role proactively uncovers news and places it where target audiences consume information.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain positive relationships with journalists, editors, producers and assignment desks across print, broadcast and digital platforms.
• Identify and engage independent media creators such as newsletter writers, podcast hosts, documentary producers and digital publishers whose audiences align with UBC Okanagan’s strengths.
• Proactively pitch story ideas, tailoring formats and supporting materials to each outlet’s conventions.
• Collaborate with deans, department heads, faculty and administrative communicators to surface stories directly from the source.
• Coordinate media outreach for university initiatives, facilities, services, goals and achievements.
• Monitor media coverage and emerging channels, including podcasts and creator‑led platforms, to inform strategy.
• Work independently while reporting to the Director of Public Affairs.
• Support cross‑campus coordination with Media Relations colleagues at UBC Vancouver.

Required profile

• Strong ability to build trust with internal stakeholders and external media contacts.
• Proactive storytelling mindset with experience in identifying newsworthy content.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple media relationships.
• Understanding of both traditional news outlets and emerging digital channels.
