Manager, Varsity Operations

About the role

The Manager, Varsity Operations leads the Department of Athletics & Recreation’s varsity game operations program at UBC’s Vancouver campus. This role oversees staffing, ticketing, regulatory compliance, in‑game promotions and the execution of over 100 varsity games and hosted championships each year.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement strategic plans for all aspects of varsity game operations, including scheduling, officials, facility logistics, ticketing, security and safety.
• Lead the creation and maintenance of game‑management manuals and ensure compliance with USPORTS, Canada West, NAIA and university policies.
• Manage a team of approximately 100 student staff, handling recruitment, training, scheduling and performance evaluation.
• Oversee the Varsity Operations budget, prepare financial reports, and develop long‑term fiscal plans.
• Collaborate with Marketing, Communications, Development, Integrated Support and Partnerships units to secure sponsorships and promote events.
• Coordinate bid proposals and grant submissions to host conference and national championships.

Required profile

• Proven experience in sports or event operations management, preferably within a university or collegiate setting.
• Strong knowledge of varsity sport regulations (USPORTS, Canada West, NAIA) and ability to enforce policies.
• Excellent leadership skills with experience supervising large numbers of student staff.
• Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, develop strategic plans and oversee complex logistical projects.
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required by game schedules.
