Manager, Commodity Tax

About the role

The Manager, Commodity Tax leads the indirect tax function for CTC and its subsidiaries, ensuring compliance, risk mitigation, and strategic tax planning across the organization. Reporting to the AVP, Commodity Tax, this role serves as the primary subject‑matter expert on sales and commodity taxes for enterprise initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and interpret commodity tax legislation, rulings, and court decisions affecting retail, real‑estate, and financial sectors, and communicate implications.
• Design and improve processes to enhance operational efficiency and data accuracy for tax accounting and analysis.
• Collaborate with the AVP to assess federal and provincial tax impacts of complex transactions, aiming to minimize tax costs while managing risk.
• Oversee documentation for systems and procedures related to tax collection, recovery, and remittance.
• Lead federal and provincial tax audits, handling negotiations, objections, and settlements.
• Train, mentor, and develop team members to build succession and cross‑training.
• Build relationships across the enterprise, delivering training sessions and regular updates on tax matters.
• Engage with external stakeholders, including dealers, vendors, customers, and government officials.
• Represent CTC in industry groups such as the Commodity Tax Industry Group, Retail Council of Canada, and Canadian Bankers Association.
• Participate in special projects that affect tax compliance and planning, and prepare presentations for senior management.

Required profile

• Professional accounting designation and/or completion of an in‑depth GST/HST program.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Experience researching complex tax issues and providing clear guidance.
• Proven problem‑solving ability, with a focus on process improvement.
• Demonstrated leadership capabilities and the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives.
