Line Locator Assistant

About the role

McElhanney is seeking a Line Locator Assistant to support utility locating and surveying projects in Drumheller, Alberta. The role involves working outdoors, assisting the field crew, and gaining hands‑on experience in line locating and surveying.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Field Supervisor or Crew Chief with utility locate tasks.
• Prepare accurate field notes as required.
• Clean, maintain, and stock equipment and vehicle supplies.
• Operate tools such as metal detectors, survey tripods, chainsaws, axes, sledgehammers and shovels to complete assignments.
• Travel to remote sites and work extended periods in varied environmental conditions.

Required profile

• Positive attitude with willingness to learn and adapt.
• Reliable, punctual and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Good written and verbal communication skills and basic computer knowledge.
• High school diploma; technical education or prior experience is an asset but not required.
• Physically fit, able to lift heavy equipment and work in wildlife‑populated, remote areas.
• Valid driver’s licence with a clean record and ability to travel up to three weeks away.
• Willingness to undergo pre‑employment drug, alcohol and fitness testing.

Required skills

• Operation of metal detectors.
• Use of survey tripods.
• Handling of chainsaws, axes, sledgehammers and shovels.
