Job description
About the role
Armstrong Fluid Technology is seeking a Lead Controls Engineer to design and develop the complete control system for a next‑generation critical infrastructure product. You will work on a standardized, high‑volume product, ensuring consistent performance across all units from concept through production.
Key responsibilities
- Design and implement closed‑loop pressure, flow and temperature control strategies for fluid systems.
- Architect the overall control topology, including alarm, event, and parameter frameworks.
- Develop secure communications using industrial protocols (BACnet, Modbus, MQTT) and integrate with building/facility management systems.
- Optimize control algorithms for energy efficiency and equipment performance.
- Create and maintain firmware for embedded controllers and PLCs, providing field support.
- Embed cybersecurity best practices, including secure firmware updates and IEC 62443 alignment.
- Design intuitive HMI for commissioning, diagnostics, manual overrides and role‑based access.
- Define checkout and factory test procedures to verify each production unit.
- Lead technical reviews, mentor engineers and establish controls design standards.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics or Computer Engineering (ENG designation required).
- Minimum 10 years experience developing control systems for industrial or mission‑critical products.
- Proven track record designing and tuning closed‑loop control for pumps, valves or thermal‑hydraulic systems.
- Experience with engineering change management, BOM release and configuration control in a formal product lifecycle.
Required skills
- Closed‑loop control design and tuning (pressure, flow, temperature).
- Model‑based control design and simulation (MATLAB/Simulink).
- Sequences of operation for HVAC systems (ASHRAE Guideline 36).
- Embedded controller and PLC development; programming in C/C++ and IEC 61131‑3.
- Firmware lifecycle management (version control, upgrade procedures).
- HMI design for commissioning and diagnostics.
- Secure device communications (BACnet, Modbus, MQTT) and IEC 62443 cybersecurity alignment.
- HVAC energy standards (ASHRAE 90.1) and product safety compliance (UL/CSA 60730, EMC).
- Hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing and control system verification.
