Laborer - Scrap Yard

About the role

Gerdau is hiring an entry-level laborer in its production and operations department in Cornwall, Ontario. The position suits people with no prior knowledge of scrap metals and recycling who are able to learn quickly and have a strong work ethic. The laborer assists with scrap inspection, sortation and general yard maintenance, learns to operate mobile equipment and performs general maintenance on machinery, and uses strong communication to keep workers, truck drivers, peddlers and contractors safe.

Key responsibilities

• Follow Gerdau safety, environmental and routine procedures for the yard.
• Operate the forklift, progressing toward loader and material handler operation, to help load, unload and sort scrap.
• Inspect incoming scrap against quality and environmental standards, moving toward grading and purchasing scrap.
• Apply deductions to non-conforming materials by communicating with the scale house or yard inspector.
• Perform and document daily routine equipment care, and report faulty tools, equipment, environmental and safety hazards to a supervisor.
• Maintain a clean work area and provide good customer service.
• Remove non-conforming items from incoming scrap vehicles such as drained gas tanks, propane tanks and batteries, and quarantine radioactive materials properly.
• Sweep the shop area, remove garbage, and assist in non-ferrous sorting and processing.
• For operations with rail: move full and empty cars, operate the locomotive, activate switches, couple and uncouple cars, and set brakes or wheel blocks.

Required profile

• High school education preferred but not required.
• Ability to learn and a desire to develop as a Gerdau employee.
• Reliable commute to or plan to relocate to Cornwall, Ontario before starting work.
• In-person work; applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada without sponsorship.
