Intern Researcher – Multimodal AI & Interaction

About the role

The Human-Machine Interaction Lab at Huawei Canada is looking for a motivated intern researcher to explore multimodal AI and interaction on real devices. You will work closely with researchers and designers to turn cutting‑edge concepts into functional prototypes that showcase voice, touch, vision, gesture and sensor‑based interactions.

Key responsibilities

• Rapidly build and test prototypes that combine modalities such as voice, audio, touch, vision, gesture, motion and other sensor inputs.
• Integrate existing AI/ML models (speech recognition, speech generation, vision, language or multimodal models) into working applications and demos.
• Implement interaction logic that fuses information across modalities, e.g., voice with touch or visual context with language.
• Collaborate with researchers and designers to translate new human‑AI interaction concepts into testable prototypes and iterate based on experimental results.
• Use common ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX) for model inference, light fine‑tuning, experimentation and evaluation.
• Explore trade‑offs between on‑device and cloud‑based AI regarding latency, privacy, reliability and resource constraints.

Required profile

• Currently pursuing a Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, AI, Machine Learning, HCI or a related field.
• Strong programming skills in Python and at least one of C++, Java, C#, Kotlin or Swift.
• Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms and their time/space complexities.
• Basic knowledge of machine learning and deep learning with hands‑on experience in PyTorch, TensorFlow or JAX.
• Experience with the full ML workflow: loading/training models, running inference, evaluating outputs and debugging.
• Familiarity with at least one relevant area such as speech/audio, computer vision, multimodal learning, NLP, sensor‑based interaction or generative AI.
