Hydrovac Operator

About the role

Black & McDonald’s Calgary Utilities team is expanding and seeks a committed Hydrovac Operator to safely execute excavation processes while protecting underground utilities across various project sites.

Key responsibilities

• Operate Hydrovac trucks and related equipment safely.
• Perform minor repairs, maintenance, and troubleshoot technical issues.
• Complete required paperwork and documentation.
• Use hand and power tools effectively and perform basic vehicle maintenance and inspection.
• Control traffic and enforce work zone safety procedures.
• Comply with all regulations and Black & McDonald’s safety protocols.

Required profile

• 4-5 years’ experience operating a Hydrovac.
• Ability to work safely, problem‑solve, and adapt independently.
• Strong communication skills, teamwork, and customer focus.
• Commitment to continuous learning and accountability.

Required skills

• Hydro excavation operation and equipment maintenance.
• Interpretation of project plans and blueprints.
• Knowledge of underground utilities, soil classification, and environmental regulations.
• First aid and emergency response procedures.
• Class 1 Driver’s License with Q endorsement.
• Ground Disturbance Level II certification.
• Equipment Bonding for Hydrovac Operators certification.
• Fall Protection certification.
• CSTS certification.
