Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO)

About the role

Black & McDonald’s Western Utilities team is expanding and seeks a committed, collaborative Heavy Equipment Operator to work on electrical and civil utility construction sites. Reporting to the Project Manager, you will operate rubber‑tire backhoes and excavators while supporting project milestones safely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Operate equipment for underground utility installation in residential areas.
• Perform and log pre‑operation safety inspections and daily equipment checks.
• Read and interpret blueprints, stakes, and site signage.
• Coordinate daily activities with tradespersons, coordinators, and site superintendents.
• Conduct safety toolbox talks and complete pre‑job hazard assessments.
• Fuel, grease, and perform basic maintenance on machinery.
• Execute general labor duties and other site tasks as required.

Required skills

• Operate rubber‑tire backhoe (5+ years experience).
• Operate excavators (5+ years experience).
• Ground disturbance work.
• CSTS certification.
• Fall Arrest certification.
• WHMIS certification.
• First Aid certification.
