Head of Policy Design, Societal Harms

About the role

Anthropic is seeking a senior leader to head its Policy Design team focused on societal harms. You will guide the development of policies, detection mechanisms, and enforcement systems that define safe use of Claude, the company’s AI model.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, develop, and grow managers and teams responsible for consumer‑harm areas such as child safety, user well‑being, harmful manipulation, and election integrity.
• Coordinate policy decisions across the portfolio and create transparent mechanisms to track, document, and maintain consistency.
• Set the overall strategy for model‑level mitigations, including policies, detection systems, enforcement actions, and product‑level interventions.
• Partner closely with research, product, and engineering to design and implement effective safety layers.
• Ensure cross‑functional alignment, keeping relevant stakeholders informed and involved in policy formulation and execution.
• Manage exposure to explicit content while maintaining a safe and respectful work environment.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading policy or safety teams that address complex societal harms.
• Deep understanding of frontier AI model development, deployment, and associated risk landscapes.
• Ability to translate risk assessments into concrete policy boundaries and technical mitigations.
• Strong collaborative skills to work across research, product, and engineering functions.
• Comfort with handling sensitive or disturbing content as part of the role.
