Fire Communications Operator

About the role
The City of Mississauga is seeking a dedicated Fire Communications Operator to join its emergency dispatch team. Working under the supervision of a Communications Officer, you will be the first point of contact for 911 and other fire‑related emergency calls, ensuring rapid and accurate response.
Key responsibilities
- Receive fire alarms and answer 911 calls using telephone and computerized dispatch equipment.
- Maintain continuous radio contact with fire service vehicles during emergencies and routine activities.
- Perform system tests, record dispatch activities, and complete related communications functions.
- Provide shift coverage across evening/night (5 pm‑7 am), day (7 am‑5 pm), weekends and holidays.
- Execute additional duties as assigned by supervisory staff.
Required profile
- Ability to interact calmly and effectively with the public in high‑stress situations.
- Clear English communication and comprehension skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent; post‑secondary emergency services dispatch training is an asset.
- Emergency communications experience or related education is an asset.
- Proven keyboarding speed of at least 40 wpm with high accuracy.
- Capacity to multi‑task and manage simultaneous calls.
- Successful completion of a Level 3 Vulnerable Check at the candidate’s expense.
Required skills
- Keyboarding (minimum 40 wpm).
- APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator 1 certification (7th Ed., Canada).
- NFPA 1061 certification.
- Operation of computerized dispatch equipment.
- Radio communication with fire service vehicles.
