Equipment Operator

About the role

Black & McDonald’s Western Utilities team is seeking a dedicated Equipment Operator to join its growing crew. Reporting to the Site Foreman, you will operate rubber‑tire backhoes and mini excavators on electrical and civil utility construction sites, supporting project milestones safely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Operate rubber‑tire backhoes and mini excavators to install underground utilities in residential areas.
• Perform and log pre‑operation safety inspections, fuel and grease equipment, and conduct basic maintenance.
• Read and interpret blueprints, stakes, and signage to coordinate daily activities.
• Prepare and lead safety toolbox talks and complete pre‑job hazard assessments.

Required profile

• High School Diploma preferred and a valid Alberta driver’s licence with a clean abstract.
• Minimum five years of experience operating backhoes or mini excavators, or 2‑5 years in a construction operator role.
• Strong work ethic, ability to work safely in a fast‑paced environment, and willingness to travel.

Required skills

• Operation of rubber‑tire backhoe.

• Blueprint and site plan reading.

• Ground disturbance CSTS knowledge.
