Embedded Firmware Engineer

About the role

The Embedded Firmware Engineer will create real‑time control firmware for Q‑Block’s quantum hardware platforms. Working on ARM Cortex‑M microcontrollers, you will turn precision electronics into deterministic, trustworthy instruments that operate in mission‑critical environments.

Key responsibilities

• Design, write, test, and maintain embedded firmware modules in C/C++ for ARM Cortex‑M platforms.
• Implement and validate peripheral drivers (SPI, I2C, UART) and DMA transfer configurations.
• Develop interrupt service routines, GPIO management, and digital control loops for low‑latency I/O.
• Integrate and test firmware across multiple synchronized control units.
• Perform bench‑level hardware bring‑up, debugging, and characterization using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and signal generators.
• Write clear technical documentation and participate in design and code reviews.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering Physics, Physics, or a related field.
• 3+ years of professional experience developing embedded firmware on ARM Cortex‑M or comparable microcontrollers.
• Proven ability to read schematics and component datasheets and work at the hardware‑firmware boundary.
• Eligibility to obtain a Government of Canada security clearance and comply with Controlled Goods Program requirements.

Required skills

• C and C++ programming for bare‑metal and RTOS‑based systems.
• ARM Cortex‑M architecture, SPI, I2C, UART, DMA, GPIO, and interrupt handling.
• Digital control loops, real‑time signal processing, and timing synchronization.
• Use of laboratory instruments such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and signal generators.
• Version control, continuous integration, and structured firmware release practices.
