Electronics Technician – Chemistry Department

About the role

Under the direction of the Administrative Officer and the Chief Electronics Technician, the Electronics Technician supports daily operations of the Department of Chemistry’s Electronics Shop at McGill University. The role involves maintaining, repairing, designing, and installing laboratory instrumentation across the department and its MC2 facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain equipment, keep detailed records, and perform repairs or arrange servicing.
• Purchase electrical components, assemble and install electronic devices, and develop circuitry for laboratory use.
• Draw plans, write technical documents, and execute installations and modifications of electronic systems.
• Participate in delivery and installation of major new equipment in labs and support experimental setups.
• Provide technical support, train students, and ensure safety procedures are followed.

Required profile

• Bilingual in English and French with strong verbal and written communication.
• Experience in a teaching or research laboratory setting and knowledge of safety rules.
• Detail‑oriented, organized, and able to prioritize multiple tasks.
• Service‑oriented attitude with initiative and resourcefulness.

Required skills

• Use of multimeter, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, bench power supply, signal generator, capacitance/inductance meter, and soldering equipment.
• Proficiency with hand tools and power tools for assembly and installation.
• High level of proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) and Windows.
• Knowledge of Linux and Python is an asset.
