Director, Facilities

About the role

The Director, Facilities provides overall leadership for the City of Nanaimo’s Facilities Department, reporting to the General Manager, Community Services & Deputy CAO. This senior role oversees civic facilities, planning, project and asset management, energy initiatives and custodial services, guiding a workforce of both unionized and exempt staff.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Facilities Department in delivering safe, efficient municipal facilities and services.
• Direct planning, project management, asset and energy management programs.
• Develop policies, bylaws and procedures aligned with strategic objectives and provincial regulations.
• Advise Council and senior staff on facilities‑related matters.
• Manage unionized and exempt employee relations, ensuring compliance with collective agreements.
• Participate as a member of the City’s Senior Management team in overall city planning and administration.

Required profile

• Degree in Engineering, Building Technology or a related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Minimum eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience, including senior management in a unionized environment.
• Strategic thinker with strong relationship‑building abilities.
• Valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence.
