Controller – Oil & Gas Operations

About the role

The Controller will act as the senior finance leader and strategic business partner for a junior upstream oil & gas producer. Reporting directly to senior leadership, the role is hands‑on and central to financial performance, capital allocation, financing activities, and strategic decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the monthly close, including revenue, royalties, joint‑venture accounting, vendor payables and general ledger oversight.
• Maintain cost centres, AFE structures and ensure data integrity across financial reporting.
• Oversee capital‑expenditure tracking, forecasting and variance analysis.
• Prepare quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements, MD&A, and board reporting packages.
• Manage technical accounting areas such as depletion, asset retirement obligations and deferred taxes.
• Coordinate the annual external audit and reporting to the parent company.
• Oversee cash management, banking relationships, debt facilities and liquidity monitoring.
• Support borrowing‑base reviews, lender reporting and the company’s hedging program.
• Partner with management on annual budgets, operating forecasts and capital‑budget development.
• Provide financial analysis to support operational and strategic decisions.
• Coordinate corporate tax filings, CRA audit responses and regulatory submissions (ESTMA, Statistics Canada).
• Assist with acquisitions, divestitures, financing initiatives and other strategic projects.

Required profile

• CPA designation.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience in the Canadian upstream oil & gas industry.
• Strong understanding of E&P accounting, financial reporting, treasury management and budgeting.
• Experience with lending facilities, reserve‑based lending structures and hedging programs.
• Proven ability to operate in a lean, entrepreneurial environment.
• Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
