Civil Engineering Technologist – Laboratory Specialist

About the role

BGC Engineering is looking for an experienced Civil Engineering Technologist with strong expertise in advanced geotechnical laboratory testing to join its state‑of‑the‑art soil and rock testing facility in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Key responsibilities

• Perform index and advanced geotechnical testing of soil and rock.
• Interpret test results and select design parameters for BGC projects.
• Manage multiple laboratory testing programs and meet project deadlines.
• Prepare detailed laboratory test reports.
• Train and mentor laboratory staff and visitors.

Required profile

• B.Tech. or Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology (or equivalent).
• 8+ years of experience in geotechnical laboratory testing and operations.
• 5+ years conducting triaxial, direct simple shear, and permeability tests.
• Specialized training in critical state soil mechanics and ISO/IEC 17025 auditing.
• Proven ability to lead laboratory teams and standardize testing protocols.

Required skills

• Triaxial testing (CID, CIU, CAD, CAU).
• Direct simple shear testing (monotonic and cyclic).
• Slurry consolidometer and SWCC testing.
• Critical state soil mechanics.
• ISO/IEC 17025 auditing.
• Knowledge of ASTM, British Standards and SANS testing methodologies.
