Casual Custodian

About the role

The Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) is accepting applications for its casual custodian list. The custodian helps run the Operations Services Department and keeps school buildings clean, sanitary and attractive through cleaning and minor maintenance work. Assignments vary from week to week, often covering 4:00 pm to midnight evening shifts for 1 to 3 days, and are mainly used to cover day-to-day school needs. The position is covered by the NSUPE collective agreement.

Key responsibilities

• Clean and maintain school buildings: sweep, mop, vacuum and strip floors; dust, wash and clean ceilings, walls, furniture, bathrooms, gyms, cafeterias, corridors, windows and doors.
• Collect mixed waste, recyclables and organics and transport them to the proper containers.
• Replenish supplies such as toilet tissue, soap and paper towels.
• Use equipment safely, report problems to the supervisor and principal, and help with tasks such as moving furniture, replacing lights, painting touch-ups and graffiti removal.
• Follow alarm procedures, WHMIS, fire and disaster plans, and perform snow and ice control and risk assessments as required.
• Protect confidential student and centre information and wear HRCE identification at all times.

Required profile

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent, and physical and mental ability to do cleaning and janitorial work.
• Able to work all shifts, including evenings, days and weekends, with call-backs and overtime possible.
• Reliable transportation and willingness to work in the areas indicated on the application.
• Criminal records check with vulnerable sector and child abuse registry search issued within the last 6 months is mandatory.
• Previous janitorial experience is an asset.

• Ability to perform minor maintenance and to react quickly to emergencies.
• Knowledge of health and safety procedures, including fire and safety plans.
