About the role
Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Suicide Prevention and Crisis Management, the Case Manager in the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS) supports McGill’s Student Suicide Prevention Framework. The role serves as the first point of contact for students facing academic, personal, or crisis situations, providing confidential short‑term support and coordinating referrals to appropriate services.
Key responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Associate Director to implement and evaluate the Student Suicide Prevention Framework.
- Develop and deliver training on suicide prevention, distress recognition, crisis response, and referral pathways for faculty, staff, and stakeholders.
- Provide consultation to faculties on post‑vention protocols after student deaths or critical incidents.
- Assess student safety risks and manage complex cases ranging from academic difficulties to high‑risk crises.
- Maintain up‑to‑date, confidential case files and ensure regular follow‑up with students.
- Coordinate referrals to internal and external support services, including hospitals when necessary.
- Participate in weekly ODOS and Crisis Response Team meetings and lead discussions with faculty regarding students of concern.
- Stay current on best practices in case management, threat assessment, and crisis intervention.
Required profile
- Ability to multitask in high‑pressure environments and make discretionary decisions during crises.
- Strong judgment in weighing competing demands and managing ambiguous situations.
- Experience working collaboratively within a team and communicating effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Commitment to confidentiality, student advocacy, and proactive problem‑solving.
- Knowledge of English at a high proficiency level (assessment level #4).
- Minimum three years of related experience in crisis intervention, suicide prevention, or mental‑health case management.
