Barrister & Solicitor – Civil Crown Counsel (Calgary)

About the role

The Alberta Justice and Solicitor General’s Legal Services Division is seeking a Barrister & Solicitor to join the Family and Surrogate Court Litigation Team in Calgary. This permanent, full‑time position offers the opportunity to work on complex family‑law matters, child‑youth cases, and international child abduction issues while supporting government priorities.

Key responsibilities

• Represent Children and Family Services in court applications, trials and appeals under the Child Youth and Family Enhancement Act.
• Provide legal advice on the CYFEA, the Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, and related federal legislation.
• Advise and represent the Director of Maintenance Enforcement on child‑support matters across all court levels.
• Draft clear, concise legal opinions and assess high‑risk, high‑complexity proceedings.
• Collaborate with internal ministries, assess legal risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
• Travel throughout Alberta to represent clients in regional courts as needed.

Required profile

• Member in good standing of the Alberta Law Society.
• Experience in family, child‑youth or surrogate court litigation.
• Strong analytical abilities and capacity to handle confidential, sensitive matters.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
