Backend Engineer (Ruby) – AI Agent Observability

About the role

GitLab is looking for a Backend Engineer to join the Agent Observability team within AI Engineering. You will help design and build systems that let AI agents interact with the full software delivery lifecycle, extending beyond simple code generation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, ship, and maintain features for Agent Observability and interactions across the GitLab monolith backend and AI gateway.
• Collaborate with product, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists to refine requirements and deliver iterative enhancements.
• Design, implement, and review GraphQL and REST APIs, ensuring reliability, scalability, and clear contracts.
• Improve automated testing using RSpec and related frameworks to boost quality and feedback loops.
• Share standards, patterns, and learnings to raise the bar for responsible AI integration.
• Participate in Tier 2 on‑call rotations to troubleshoot production issues.

Required profile

• Proven experience building backend systems in a fast‑moving, high‑visibility environment.
• Comfortable working with AI‑focused teams and integrating AI contributions into core platforms.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and a commitment to secure, performant code.
