About the role
The University of British Columbia is seeking an Associate Vice President to lead its Government and Community Relations function. Reporting to the Vice‑President of External Relations, this senior executive will shape strategy, advise senior leadership, and strengthen partnerships with government and community stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
- Define and execute the university’s government relations strategy across federal, provincial and municipal levels.
- Provide strategic counsel to the President, Vice‑Presidents and senior administration on policy and advocacy matters.
- Lead the Community Relations unit, developing work plans that align with the university’s refreshed strategic plan.
- Manage and nurture relationships with government officials, industry partners, Universities Canada, the U15, and the Research Universities’ Council of BC.
- Collaborate with the senior leadership team to integrate government affairs into the broader external relations mission and fiscal framework.
Required profile
- Proven senior‑level experience in government affairs, public policy or external relations, preferably in a higher‑education setting.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and build high‑impact partnerships.
- Strong strategic thinking and excellent communication skills.
- Track record of managing complex stakeholder networks and delivering results.
