Wellbore Engineer / Technologist – In Situ Applications

About the role

The Alberta Energy Regulator is seeking a Wellbore Engineer or Technologist to support safe, environmentally responsible development of oil‑sand resources. You will join a multidisciplinary technical team focused on continuous improvement, inclusive culture, and solving complex drilling, completion and wellbore integrity challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Review and provide timely recommendations on applications for drilling, completion, suspension, abandonment and thermal operations to ensure compliance with OSCA and OGCA.
• Apply risk‑based technical review principles and draft case‑specific approval conditions, referencing Directives 020, 023, 036, 051, 087 and 054.
• Communicate regulatory requirements to industry representatives, the public and government stakeholders.
• Conduct desktop surveillance audits and occasional site visits to verify risk mitigation and compliance.
• Coordinate compliance actions with regulatory staff and field centres.
• Provide technical support for emergency incident response and conditions management, with optional on‑call duties.
• Support data analysis and qualification to ensure reliable decision‑making.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technologist Diploma (mechanical, chemical or oil & gas focus).
• 5–7 years of experience in wellbore engineering or a related energy‑sector field.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Technologist (P.Tech.) designation.

Required skills

• Risk‑based technical review and risk assessment.
• Wellbore integrity analysis and compliance auditing.
• Data analysis and qualification.
• Knowledge of OSCA, OGCA and relevant AER Directives (020, 023, 036, 051, 087, 054).
• Emergency incident response and conditions management.

What we offer

• Salary range $102,000‑$120,000 per year (T3 Level 5).
• Full‑time permanent position.
