Trading Analyst – Carbon Derivatives

About the role

MSL Climate, the environmental markets division of McGill St‑Laurent, is looking for a Trading Analyst focused on carbon derivatives. Based in Montreal, you will work closely with the Senior Compliance Carbon Trader, gaining hands‑on experience in market analysis, strategy development, and commercial execution within regulated and voluntary carbon markets.

Key responsibilities

• Support the design and improvement of carbon derivatives trading strategies.
• Conduct deep‑dive analyses of global regulated carbon programs and identify market inefficiencies.
• Perform quantitative research, back‑testing, and performance analysis of trading ideas.
• Analyze risk‑return profiles of new and existing strategies.
• Build, maintain, and enhance pricing models, forecasting tools, and scenario‑analysis frameworks.
• Automate data cleaning, structuring, and reporting workflows using Python and Excel.
• Produce weekly newsletters on regulated carbon markets and create dashboards to monitor trading activity and risk exposure.

Required profile

• Strong academic background in Finance, Engineering, Economics or a related field.
• Proven experience with data cleaning, time‑series handling and statistical modelling.
• Ability to quickly absorb complex information and deliver relevant analysis.
• Solid understanding of financial modelling, forecasting, optimization and derivatives markets.
• High ownership mindset, autonomy and problem‑solving attitude.
• Excellent communication skills and bilingual (French & English) capability.
