About the role
The Trades 2 – Painter position at the University of British Columbia involves skilled painting work across campus facilities. The role includes surface preparation, paint mixing, and the application of a variety of decorative and protective coatings to interior and exterior structures.
Key responsibilities
- Request and obtain materials and equipment needed for each painting assignment.
- Prepare surfaces by scraping, power washing, sandblasting, minor caulking and plastering.
- Mix and match paints and stains to achieve required colours and finishes.
- Apply paint, stains, vinyl and paper wall coverings, epoxy coatings, and other protective coatings using brush, roller, and air‑less spray techniques.
- Cover a wide range of items including walls, railings, doors, windows, lamp posts, fire hydrants, signage, curbs, vehicles, and furniture.
- Produce estimates, inspection reports and respond to emergency call‑outs as needed.
- Maintain a safe work environment and follow all safety protocols.
- Occasionally supervise apprentices or labourers and provide on‑the‑job training.
Required profile
- Union‑affiliated staff member in the CUPE 116 classification.
- Experience in commercial or institutional painting and surface preparation.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a trades team.
- Willingness to perform occasional after‑hours or emergency work.
Required skills
- Brush, roller and air‑less spray painting techniques.
- Paint and stain mixing.
- Surface preparation methods such as scraping, power washing, sandblasting, caulking and plastering.
- Application of epoxy coatings.
- Installation of vinyl and paper wall coverings.
What we offer
- Monthly salary range of $6,774.00 – $7,226.00 CAD.
- Opportunity for overtime at double time.
- Progressive vacation accrual up to 6 weeks.
