Staff Sergeant – Correctional Facility Leader

About the role

The Staff Sergeant leads the day‑to‑day operations of a maximum‑security correctional institution, supervising Corporals and Correctional Officers to keep the facility safe, secure and functional around the clock. This hands‑on leadership position requires decisive action, accountability and a visible presence on the floor.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and mentor Corporals and Correctional Officers, ensuring compliance with institutional standards.
• Make timely, high‑pressure decisions during incidents, emergencies and critical events.
• Lead investigations and reviews of conduct issues or critical incidents.
• Oversee staffing levels, deployment and scheduling, stepping in during high‑risk or escalated situations.
• Act as the senior on‑site leader during evenings, nights, weekends and statutory holidays.
• Support staff through challenging circumstances and enforce accountability when standards are not met.
• Maintain a safe, secure and functional environment 24/7.

Required profile

• Proven leadership experience in operational, enforcement, military, emergency‑management or similar high‑accountability settings.
• Sound judgment, resilience and the ability to remain calm in unpredictable, high‑stress environments.
• Strong decision‑making skills under pressure.
• Commitment to presence on the floor and to fostering a respectful, inclusive workplace culture.
