Senior Software Quality Engineer

About the role

Relay is building a resilient core banking platform and needs a senior quality engineer to own the quality roadmap, build testing frameworks, and scale quality operations across distributed systems.

Key responsibilities

• Own the quality roadmap for Risk Engineering and build quality frameworks for Core Banking systems, including ACH and wire transfers.
• Design, implement, and evolve CI infrastructure using ministack, Localstack, Wiremock, and PostgreSQL for testing lambdas and microservices.
• Drive shift‑left testing by embedding quality practices in sprint ceremonies and enabling developers to write tests as part of their deliverables.
• Identify and eliminate bottlenecks in quality operations, championing solutions that improve reliability and uptime.
• Develop internal tools that enhance developer experience with minimal third‑party dependencies.
• Mentor junior quality engineers and contribute to broader Quality Engineering initiatives.
• Collect defect and quality data, create dashboards, and present insights to engineering leadership and executives.
• Allocate roughly 75% of time to hands‑on building and 25% to influence, mentorship, and evangelism.

Required profile

• Proven experience building quality engineering systems from the ground up, including frameworks, test suites, and CI pipelines.
• Hands‑on testing of distributed services, lambdas, and real‑time applications in CI environments.
• Deep understanding of distributed system architecture, scalability, resilience, and test design.
• Ability to influence development teams to adopt quality practices and shift‑left testing.
• Strong debugging skills using code, logs, and traces to determine root causes.
• Experience gathering and presenting quality metrics to technical and executive audiences.
• Fluency with AI tools in daily work and ability to critically evaluate AI output.
• Comfortable working in fast‑moving agile teams and handling ambiguous requirements.
