Senior Researcher – GPU, AI & Hardware Architecture

About the role

Huawei Canada’s Software‑Hardware System Optimization Lab is seeking a senior researcher to drive next‑generation GPU, AI and hardware architecture innovations. You will work at the intersection of graphics, AI model training and heterogeneous compute to shape future consumer‑device performance.

Key responsibilities

• Research and prototype cutting‑edge GPU/AI/hardware architectures, exploring AI‑driven rendering and heterogeneous CPU/GPU/NPU co‑design.
• Design and build AI compute platforms and toolchains, including training/fine‑tuning support, model deployment harnesses and evaluation frameworks.
• Profile and optimise GPU, CPU and AI performance across multiple platforms, delivering measurable improvements from architecture down to kernel and shader level.
• Collaborate with hardware designers, driver teams, AI algorithm groups and product/game engineers to validate concepts from architecture through production.

Required profile

• PhD in a computer‑related field (AI/ML or computer architecture) with industry experience.
• Research mindset comfortable exploring uncertain frontiers, building prototypes and communicating results.
• Working knowledge of AI frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow or JAX.
• Proficiency in C/C++ and ability to balance architectural trade‑offs.
• Hands‑on experience with the GPU ecosystem (CUDA, Vulkan, OpenGL, OpenCL, WebGPU) and understanding of GPU micro‑architecture.
• Practical experience in hardware architecture, especially how graphics and AI workloads influence design decisions.
• Experience building AI agent/harness/skill toolchains, including model evaluation and orchestration.
